First technical innovation for the graphic arts industry since the 1990s planatol development

Planatol expands its adhesives portfolio in the graphic arts industry with the newly developed hotmelt adhesive Planamelt. This new technology is based on an innovative polymer structure. Available now as spine but  in the future also as side glue, it features novel characteristics in comparison to technologies previously used.

EVA and PUR adhesives are the common hotmelt technologies for the graphic arts industry.  Planatol, as first adhesive manufacturer, succeeded in transferring innovative adhesive technologies from other scopes in a system, which fulfils exactly the requirements of the graphic arts industry, solves problems in this field, operates in industrial standard and reduces process costs.

Convincing in practical tests: PUR-like quality by using customary hotmelt application systems.
Practical tests at the University of Applied Sciences Munich as well as field tests at machine manufacturers and customers show that adhesive bindings with Planamelt features considerably higher cohesiveness than adhesive bindings with common EVA hotmelts – in some cases the results are even on the level of a PUR system. Planamelt adhesives are easy and simple to work and can be processed on standard hotmelt equipment without modification in OneShot and TwoShort procedure at low and material friendly temperature. The adhesive is suitable for nozzle and roller application.

The odour at processing is quite low. Furthermore the adhesive has a constant viscosity. Also under high thermal load, e.g. by multiple heating, it keeps stable in its adhesive properties.

Further benefits are a high resistance to thermal distortion and oil, which is particularly advantageous for strong printed papers. Especially in digital printing Planamelt achieves excellent measurements.

Perfect for thick and different paper grades
The adhesion to difficult surfaces as well as the very good layflat characteristics are remarkable. Planamelt is qualified for the adhesion of heavy grade papers up to 250 g/m². Tests at different OEMs confirm pull resistance values of 13N/cm for fully printed papers with a grammage of 170g/m². Therefore the adhesive with price level comparable to high quality EVA achieves higher pull resistance values than an EVA with at the same time significant reduced applied quantity of adhesive.

That means the process costs are on the same level as a conventional EVA and only half as high as of PUR adhesives.  Also maintenance effort and costs run low by using Planamelt.
